Historic Coronation at Mapo Hall Unites Tradition and Royal Glory

The ancient city of Ibadan witnessed a historic moment on Thursday as former Oyo State governor, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, was crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland in a colourful cultural ceremony held at the iconic Mapo Hall. The coronation attracted thousands of spectators, dignitaries, traditional rulers, and political figures from across Nigeria who converged to celebrate the peaceful transition of leadership in Ibadan monarchy.

The event began with traditional rites performed by the Olubadan-in-Council at Ladoja’s palace in Bodija before the royal procession made its way to the venue of the coronation. The monarch, adorned in a majestic Aso-Oke robe woven in royal Adire patterns, symbolized the dignity of the Yoruba throne. He was presented with the staff of office by the Governor of Oyo State, officially sealing his ascension to the ancient stool.

Residents described the coronation as one of the most glamorous in recent history. Cultural troupes from all 11 local government areas of Ibadanland performed traditional dances, while hunters fired ceremonial gunshots into the sky. The atmosphere was electric and celebratory—a true testimony to the unity and pride of the Ibadan people.
